Deafness in dogs can be congenital (inherited from birth) or acquired through trauma, drug reactions or old age. Deafness is more common in white hair dogs, though any dog can be hard of hearing. Deaf dogs are just as intelligent as hearing dogs. They are great for those who only want one dog or for those with other pets in the home. It’s important to note that deaf dogs can and do live happy fulfilling lives and that many adapt well to their conditions; however, living with a deaf dog does pose some challenges.
